Carpentry

In Carpentry I, you learn your basic carpentry skills, such as learning how to use various power tools and hand tools.
In Carpentry II, you advance your skills by building more difficult structures. To get into the carpentry program, all you need is to be a student at Central High School. This class is not that much different as far as the instruction goes, just the type of field and trade you learn is different. Carpentry 1 is open to any students wishing to take it. Carpentry II and III are more advanced, and you must have taken the previous class to take them.

We have a new carpentry teacher this year, Shane Flippo, and he has been in the carpentry business for 15 years. Some of the projects he would like to build this year are storage buildings, swings, dog houses, picnic tables, deck chairs, and deer stands.

This program is nationally certified by the state of Alabama, Department of Education Office of Career/Technical Education, Alabama Education Association, and National Education Association.

The Carpentry classes build everything from box stands, ladder stands to an entire building. Last year the carpentry students built an entire building and a class room by themselves. The building was built for our new R.O.T.C. program. We have pictures of the new building below. They did everything in it from framing the walls, running electricity, roofing, hanging sheet rock, vinyl siding, to the finishing touches of paint.

Later the carpentry students built a classroom for the Health Care Academy. It is used for an athletic training facility for the Sports Medicine Program In it they also did everything such as framing, running electricity, hang sheet rock, and painting. There are a few finishing touches that need to be done to it because they did not get completely finished before the summer came up. It is also a little bit messy because there is a lot of equipment lying around that will be used later by the Health Care Academy. It might not look like much, but before this it was a dusty old garage.

The tools we use are almost all Dewalt tools. We have 12v, 18v, and 24v Cordless Drills, Mitre saws, Compound Mitre Saw, Table Saws, Band Saws, Belt Sanders, Bench Grinders, Routers, Circular Saws, Saber Saws, Palm Sanders, Jointers, Planers, Radial Arm Saws, and hundreds of other tools that are used by carpentry students.
