On Saturday, August 16, 2008 Central's NJROTC cadets pitched in to lend a helping hand to families in need of a Habitat for Humanity home. Forty-two cadets showed up to perform community service hours.

 

 

   

 

NJROTC unit of CHS tutored fourth and fifth grade students at Ridgecrest Elementary School on flag ethics and how to properly care for the flag when raising and lowering it.

 

Central High School Senior, Rachel Harp, was named the outstanding delegate for the General Assembly at the Georgia Tech Model UN.  CHS represented Colombia during the competition October 13-15, which included schools from Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

         

Congratulations to the Red Devil Regiment II (two) Competition Band.  They competed in Opp at the "Little Big Horn" marching competition.  They scored straight superior ratings (top scores) in the following areas: Drum Major, Color Guard, Majorettes, Percussion, and all three superior scores for band from the band judges.  They tied for second place in class by the band judges scores, and placed third in class overall. 

 

Congratulations to Orwin Smith and Rachel Harp on being selected at the Wendy’s High School Heisman winners for Central High School. These students will go on to compete at the state and possibly national level.

         

Central High School Scholars’ Bowl team won 1st place in the 6A division at the Southern Union Tournament. The high scorer for the team was Sarah Bowser with 170 points.

 

Central High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps took on a three-day tour of Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, during their fall break (October 13-15)to visit an ROTC at a university.  Two former cadets of Central High School who now attend Savannah State University as Midshipmen provided their own personal stories of getting adjusted to college life and life as a Midshipmen.

         

Congratulations to the CHS Competition Cheerleaders for winning 1st Place and being named Grand Champions at the Cheersport Regional Competition.

 

Congratulations to the Red Devil Regiment II for competing at the Old South Marching Contest on Saturday, November 1.  The Band and percussion scored very well with our Drum Major (Kaitlyn Cross) scoring Best in Class and Majorettes (Isalyn Sumbry, Ashlie Boyd, and Lakeri Washinton)  scoring Best in Class.  Congratulations to these students for again representing our school and community in such a fine manner.

Congratulations to Central’s NJROTC for winning second place overall in the inspection phase of the drill competition in Eufaula. The cadets also won 3rd place overall in the armed drill exhibition and 3rd overall in the unarmed drill exhibition. Cadet Daniel Roehrig led the armed drill team and Cadet Ashleigh Sumbry led the unarmed drill team.

 

Congratulations to the Model UN delegates for their outstanding performance in the CSU Model United Nations. Special recognition goes to Rachel Harp, Chance Renfro, Nick Dichiara, Caleb Walker, Claire Cawthorne and Darren Morten for winning multiple awards in their committees.

         
Congratulations to the following students who received a superior rating at State Theatre Competition: Barak Ingram, Darryl Ham, Erin Wilson, Lauren Storey, Chelsea Allen, Stephen Curtiss, Kanise Wiggins, Nick DiChiara, Caleb Walker. Darrell Ham also won first place for solo musical dramatic and Eric Harper received a $1000 scholarship to study theatre.

The Central High School NJROTC cadets attended the annual Orienteering Camp and Competition December 5-7, 2008 at Camp McDowell.  Central cadets and 250 cadets from other schools learned to navigate through and around various land areas using a map and compass.  The team consisted of Perry Holton, Cameron DeJesus, Aaron Huggins, Devon Bowman, Portia Henderson, and Jasmine King.   Perry Holton and Aaron Huggins placed second and third respectively by completing the 1.6 mile yellow course.  In addition, the cadets earned a first place trophy for the yellow course team competition.  

 

Congratulations to the Central Key Club for their performance January 19 at the Opelika High School Key Club’s “Swishin’ on a Mission” fundraiser. Dave Wilborn won 1st place in the 3 Point Shoot Out and Justin Wiley won 1st place in the Free Throw competition. Seventeen Key Club members and their guests participated and represented Central High School.

         

Congratulations to the Central Scholar’s Bowl team for its outstanding performance at the Andrew College Scholar’s Bowl competition on January 21. The team of Chance Renfroe, Hannah Richards, David Conner, Angel Garrison, Sarah Selvidge and Sarah Bowser placed 1st overall. Individual medals went to the following competitors: 9th grade – 1st place Social Studies, Taggert Vinzant; 2nd place Science, Cody Hughes; 2nd place Math, Paul Waldrop; 10th grade – 1st place Math, Laurel Bouldin; 1st place Science, Darmarrius Matthews; 2nd place Science, Danielle Davis; 2nd place Social Studies, Shawna Easter; 11th grade – 2nd place Science, Angel Garrison.

 

  Congratulations to Central High School Navy JROTC program for winning 1st place overall in the Baldwin High School Drill Competition in Milledgeville, Georgia on January 24.  Competing against 12 other high schools, the cadets placed in several categories of drill and track and field. They won 1st place in the 8 x 100 relay race, 1st place in the Crab Race, 2nd place in Push-Ups, 3rd place in Sit-Ups, 2nd Place in Armed Basic Drill and 3rd Place in the UnArmed Exhibition Drill. At the end of the competition they were awarded the 1st Place Trophy for the Drill Meet. 

         

CHS Cheerleaders placed 1st in its division at Cheersport Grand Championships in Atlanta, GA, on January 25th and also won Grand Champion.  Congratulations, girls!

 

Coach Gary Socha has been selected as 2008 South Sectional Coach of the Year for girls’ golf. That area includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The Girls Golf Team won the AHSAA Class 6A State Championship in its first season as a sport for Central.

On January 31 in Auburn, the Central High School Wrestling Team competed in the State Wrestling Sectionals. 11th grader Quincy Lewis qualified for the state championship at the 121 weight class! All wrestlers had a great tournament and earned a lot of respect in the wrestling community.

Congratulations to Rain (Chelsea) Hogan who won second place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest on Saturday, February 9 in the local competition.  Also representing Central was Kierra Moffett   Central High School’s FBLA conducted the Southern Regional Competition February 2-6. Joseph led Central to the AHSAA final four. He finished the season shooting 73% from the floor with 4 blocks.
         
Congratulations to Coach Bobby Wright for being named All Bi-City Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. The Red Devils were 24-5 this season and lost in the playoffs to eventual state champions Vestavia Hills in the final four.

Congratulations to Central NJROTC Cadet Shauvez Bennett who has received a full Marine Corps ROTC Scholarship worth $180,000.00 to Tuskegee University.  The scholarship pays full tuition, room & board, and he will receive a monthly stipend of $300 per month.  Mr. Bennett also is the recipient of a full HBCU ROTC Scholarship at Savannah State University.  He has elected to accept the Marine Corps Scholarship and will attend Tuskegee University.

  Congratulations to Central NJROTC Cadet Shanaevia Joseph who had received a full Navy ROTC Scholarship also worth $180,000.00.  She will attend Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, this fall.  She will receive a monthly stipend of $300 per month. 
         
Congratulations to Central NJROTC Cadet Arcacia Butler who has received a partial academic scholarship and will attend Tuskegee University this fall.  She will enroll in the Air Force ROTC program at Tuskegee and is highly favored to receive the Air Force ROTC Scholarship after her first semester at Tuskegee.   Congratulations to Central NJROTC Cadet Travorious Renfro, a junior who has been selected to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Leadership Training in Daytona Beach, Florida, this summer.  He was chosen among a select group of candidates from around the country.  Mr. Renfro has also been selected to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar in Annapolis, Maryland, this summer.  That too was very competitive and he was chosen among thousands of candidates to attend.

Susan Lawhon who were selected Central High School's certified and one classified employee through the I Make The Difference award program.  This program rewards employees who demonstrate extraordinary concern for the needs and welfare of their colleagues and students, make a significant contribution to the improvement of their work-site or who have a positive effect on other people are eligible for this recognition.

The Department of the Navy, Education and Training Command has recognized Central High School Navy JROTC program as a Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors for 2008-2009 school year.  This is the fourth consecutive year that Central NJROTC has received distinguished honors.  The Distinguished Unit award is the highest recognition given by the Navy to a high school and only 20 percent of the 630 NJROTC units nationwide achieve this status.  Selection factors include community service, academics, and overall drill performances.  

Congratulations to the Devilette Track Team on its fourth place finish at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Sectional 2 track meet. The quartet of Stephanie Jackson, Brandy Jackson, Sankeia Maddox and Teisha Huff won the 2009 4x800 meter race.

         

Congratulations to the Red Devil Track Team on the Alabama High School Sectional 2 track meet. Brandon Garrett and Montrel Crawford were sectional runner-ups in their respective events.

 

Congratulations to Chance Renfro, Alex Harrell and Lena Lemieux for advancing to Sub-State Competition in 6A Golf.

         

Congratulations to Haley Wilson for being name to 2nd Team All-SEC Golf Team and 1st Team Freshman All-SEC Golf Team.

  Congratulations to members of the Devilette Track Team on their performance at the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Track Meet. The foursome of Machen Spencer, Kristen Ghant, Portia Watkins and Teisha Huff finished 4th in the 4x400 meter relay. Erynne Bird finished 5th in 200 meter dash.
         

The Red Devils Boys Track Team placed 10th overall at the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Track Meet. State runner-up Deont’e Swinton placed 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles and 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles. The foursome of Orwin Smith, Dante Devouse, Demetrius Hill and Cordary Clark placed 5th in 4x100 meter relay.

 

Congratulations to Melissa Wallace, female 2009 “Above and Beyond Student Athlete” for the Columbus Regional Bi-City area. Each student was selected by their Athletic Director and had to be well rounded in academics, community services and sports.

         
Congratulations to Alex Harrell, 8th grader representing Central at the AHSAA 6A Girls Golf Championship. Alex was the runner-up, ending up only 4 strokes behind the leader.   Congratulations to teacher Jason Sasser who found East Alabama Sam's Golden Converter by solving the clues. The Citizen and East Alabama Cable sponsored the contest. Mr. Sasser won one free year of cable, telephone and Internet service, a high definition television set, and $2000.
