Bernard Spivey was named All-American at the National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships held July 25-31, 2005 in Indianapolis. He was 6th in the nation for the 600 meter dash with a time of 49.09.
 
The Business/Marketing Department received an award for being one of the top 15 departments in the state of Alabama. They received it at summer conference from the Career/Technical Section of the State Department of Education.

 
Julie Chandler (class of '05) placed 6th in the nation in Job Seeking Skills in Nashville as a part of the Health Occupations Students of America National Conference during summer 2005. She was also recognized as a gold level recipient for the Barbara James Service Award and the National Recognition Program. Laura Satterwhite and Jewel Limbaugh were also recognized for the National Recognition Program. Laura Satterwhite and Kelcy Joseph were recognized for the Barbara James Service Award.
 
Brandon Williams (class of '05) received a full football scholarship August 5, 2005 to the University of North Alabama in Florence.

 
Central High's new Writing teacher Art Belliveau was named Teacher of the Year at Russell County Middle School for 2005 and was also the school's Headline Award winner.
 
At Summer Camp, June 2005, the Varsity Cheerleading Squad won First Place in Home Pom and Third Place in Dance Competition. Senior Cheerleaders Lindsey Rash, Stephanie Jones, Kendyl Sumbry, Chastity Threadcraft and Nakita Pittman are All Stars.

 
Congratulations to Karli Jackson, Christian Lawrence, Raymond Jones and Collin Ray, who placed 6th INTERNATIONALLY at the Future Problem Solvers Convention in Washington, D.C. this past summer.
 
Varsity Football Coach Ron Nelson was selected to coach the North-South All Star game in Troy December 23.


 
At Summer Camp, June 2005, the Junior Varsity Cheerleading Squad won First Place in Home Pom, Second Place in Extreme Routine and Second Place in Camp Cheer Competition.
 
Tommy Vickers, new Assistant Principal, was named Secondary Teacher of the Year for Phenix City Schools in 2005.

Seniors Earl Alexander and Bryant McKissic were named to the "Dandy Dozen", Columbus Ledger-Enquirer's list of the bi-city area's top football prospects for 2005.


 
The Community Problem Solving team of Sarah Turner, Joseph Mathews, Carly Addison, Laura Spurgeon, Sharon Welburn, Lacey Valentini, Annie White, Macy Morris, Katie Taff and Collin Ray won 4th place at International CMPS competition this past summer.
 
Mrs. Barbara Romey, sponsor of the Central Future Problem Solvers team, won OUTSTANDING SENIOR COACH in Washington, D.C. this summer.

Congratulations to the Healthcare Academy for being recognized as an Outstanding Support Group for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A special congratulations to Terrance Levery who designed the winning T-shirt for the T-shirt contest.
Congratulations to Logan Copley for being chosen to serve as a Senate Page in Washington, D.C. during the Second Semester. Only two students are chosen from Alabama each semester.

 
Brooke Harwood placed second in Poetry at the State Beta Club Convention in Birmingham February 2-3, 2006.
 
Congratulations to Marquis Purnell on his performance at the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Indoor Championships February 3-4, 2006. Marquis placed third in the Shot Pot with a throw of 48'5".

 
The Junior Varsity Math Team placed third in their division at the Math Competition at CVCC February 8, 2006. Amber Whitehead was the top Junior Varsity team scorer, and Collin Ray was the top Varsity team scorer.
 
The Central High's National Honor Society students attended the State Convention February 10-11, 2006. They placed 1st in state for the Scrapbook, 1st in state for the Service Project, 2nd in state for the Involvement Project, the Gold Chapter of Distinction (the highest honor for a chapter). Laura Spurgeon received the $500 Al Bigger scholarship.

David Dawkins was awarded a football scholarship to Alabama A&M University.
 
Jannah Huckaby, Kayla Miles, Kendall Livingston and Oveyanna Gordon were awarded softball scholarships to Chattahoochee Valley Community College.

 
Matt Powers, Alex Montes, Wally Gentry and Joshua Riddle were awarded baseball scholarships to Chattahoochee Valley Community College.
 
Jamie Tyner was awarded a football scholarship to Miles College.

 

Congratulations to the Future Problem Solving Team for its outstanding results at State competition March 10-11, 2006. The team of Collin Ray, Raymond Jones, Karli Jackson and Christian Lawrence placed 1st in Senior Group Booklet, qualifying for National competition in Colorado. Carly Addison placed 2nd in Senior Individual Scenario.

 

Get Fit Phenix City won 1st place in Senior Community Problem Solving and Graduate with the ARTS won 2nd place in Senior Community Problem Solving at State competition March 10-11, 2006.

These students will attend the FBLA State Leadership Conference and Competition on April 6-7, 2006.

 

The Softball Complex at Central High School had its ribbon-cutting Tuesday, February 21, 2006. School and city officials were on hand to celebrate the event. Much of the work was done by students enrolled in Career/Technical classes.

, who has been awarded a full 4-year Navy ROTC Scholarship to attend Auburn University. Marquis will be commissioned a Naval Officer upon graduating from Auburn.

 

Congratulations to the Keyhole staff. The Keyhole newspaper received an All-Alabama rating from the Alabama Scholastic Press Association. This is the highest rating a school paper can receive. The following students also received individual awards: John Smith won 1st place for cartoon or strip; Laura Spurgeon won 3rd place for newsmagazine spread design.

 

 

Congratulations to Central High School NJROTC cadets Ashley Colbert and Octavia Torbert who were selected to attend the highly competitive Naval Academy Summer Training program at Annapolis, Maryland (June 3-8). They were selected based on their academic achievement and leadership.

 

Congratulations to Jerrica Lewis, CHS 2005, upon the publication of her book, "Bakerville Prodigy". A book signing was held at Barnes & Noble on April 1, 2006.

 

 

Central High School’s Chapter of FBLA attended the State Leadership Conference April 6-7 in Birmingham. Congratulations to the following students: Quindrae Ogletree-2nd in Networking Concepts; Mary Holton-2nd in Banking and Financial Systems; Sierra Pettway-2nd in Job Interview. These students qualify to attend the FBLA National Leadership Conference in June, Nashville, Tennessee.

 

Congratulations to Carly Addison for earning a Regional Gold Key Award and a National Silver Key Award in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition. Carly will receive her award at Carnegie Hall on June 8.

 

 

Congratulations to Rasheda Hood and Ashley R. Allen for being the winners of the 2005-2006 Henry Fleming Scholarship Awards.  Each winner received a $2,500 scholarship for the college or educational agency of their choice.  The scholarship was named in honor of Mr. Henry D. Fleming, who was the Diversified Occupations (D.O.) teacher in the Phenix City Schools from 1949-1977.  The Phenix City Advisory Council on Career Technical Education established the scholarship to encourage students who have completed a career technical course to continue their education and assist them with funds for post secondary education. 

 

Congratulations to Johnathan Tarver, who has been awarded a baseball scholarship to Central Alabama Community College.

 

 

Congratulations to Anthony Mooney, CHS English teacher, upon the publication of his book, "The Yellow Man Was Here". PublishAmerica believes that "Anthony Brian Mooney is a promising talent."

 

Ginger Dempsey, CHS Musical Theatre teacher, was named Secondary Teacher of the Year for Phenix City Schools in 2006. Mrs. Dempsey was the Specialty Teacher of the Year for CHS.

 

 

Congratulations to Everett Duke for being named a Kentucky Fried Chicken National Scholar. Everett will receive a $5000 scholarship for each of his 4 years at Auburn University.

 

Central's NJROTC has been named "The  Most Improved NJROTC Unit Award" in the country.  They also received "Distinguished Unit Award with Academic Honors".
