Central's NJROTC has been named "The Most Improved NJROTC Unit Award" in the country.
They also received "Distinguished Unit Award with Academic Honors". The CHS Unit is under the direction of Lt. Carlton Jones and Gunnery Sgt. Anthony Elder.

Central High School students beat competitors from eight countries and 46 states at the 25th annual Future Problem Solving International Conference.The students placed in all four divisions, including Grand Champion in the senior division of civic community, First Place in skit, third place in alternate booklet writing, and seventh place in booklet writing. The 12 students are part of a gifted program under the supervision of Mrs. Barbara Romey.

The students from Central High School, in addition to Duke and Spurgeon, are: Carly Addison, Karli Jackson, Christian Lawrence, Collin Ray, Raymond Jones, Tasha Dew, Sarah Turner, Katie Taff, Maia Evans and Tim Mathews.

Coach Ron Nelson has stepped down as Head Baseball Coach, turning over the reins to Coach Jason Stamp.  Nelson accumulated an impressive 513-182 record in 24 seasons with the Red Devils.  Nelson will continue as Head Football Coach.

NJROTC Cadets Ashley Colbert and Octavia Torbert attended Leadership Camp at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland in June.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Scholar's Bowl Team for placing 2nd at the Southern Union Tournament October 10.  Logan Copley was Team High Scorer.

Congratulations to Joy Vickers, who has been selected the Teacher Dedicatee for School Year 2006-2007.

CONGRATULATIONS to the 9^th Grade Football Team on their undefeated season.  The Red Devils finished with a perfect 7-0 record.  For the season, the offense averaged 32 points per game, and the defense allowed only 5.8 points per game. Congratulations for a  great year!

Congratulations to the CHS Dirt Devils Robotics Team for their 5^th place finish in the Alabama BEST Robotics Competition at Auburn University October 28, 2006. Their robot performed better than the robots from 11 other schools including the likes of Hoover High School’s Engineering Academy, Brewbaker Technical Magnet High School, Vestavia Hills High School and Auburn High School. Team members included the Drivers: Jake Shelhouse , Caleb Walker, Nick DiChiara, Anna Elkins, and Trey Caudell. The Spotters were: John Carroll, Chelsea Allen, Terrance Jackson, Justin Morgan, Hannah Frander, Sara Selvage and Jessica Martin. The team Mentors were Mrs. Romey, Mr. Howell, and Coach Morgan.

Eight Central High School students have been selected for the cast of "High School Musical", to be performed in December at the Liberty Theatre in Columbus. Congratulations to Brett Horne, Kaylen Morgan, Erin Wilson, Hannah Frander, Lauren Storey, Aliah Spencer, Stephen Curtiss, and Darryl Ham.

Congratulations to Logan Copley for winning the William Randolph Hearst Senate Competition. He will spend a week in Washington, D.C. and receive a $5,000 scholarship. Only two students from each state are selected.

Congratulations to NJROTC Armed Drill Team for placing 3^rd place overall in the Southeastern Regional Drill Competition in Montgomery November 4. The Armed Drill Team was led by Cadet George Cunningham and placed 3^rd out of 11 area high schools.

Congratulations to NJROTC Cadets Amanda Jackson and Brittney Smith for scoring an “Outstanding” on the recent Command Inspection that was conducted November 1. Both cadets are first year cadets and had a perfect uniform. They were awarded the Personal Appearance award.

Congratulations to the students who participated in the Trumbauer District Competition represented CHS well. Receiving Superior ratings were: Tamasah Quick and Kiara James – Comedic Monologue; Erin Wilson – Dramatic Musical Solo; Collin Ray and Erin Wilson – Comedic Musical Duet; Kaylen Morgan – Dramatic Monologue; Ensemble Cast – Blake O’Steen, Karli Jackson, Christian Lawrence, Sage Setayesh, Collin Ray.

Congratulations to the students who competed at the State Trumbauer Drama Competition. Receiving  Superior ratings: Kaylen Morgan, Tamisha Quick, Kiara James, Erin Wilson. The ensemble cast (Blake O’Steen, Karli Jackson, Christian Lawrence, Lauren Duke, Collin Ray, Jake Shellhouse) won Second Place and all were made members of the All-Star Cast. Karli Jackson won Best Actress and Christian Lawrence won Best Supporting Actress.

Congratulations to Karli Jackson for being selected the Exchange Club Student of the Quarter.

 NJROTC held their mid-year awards ceremony 12-13-06 and the following cadets were recognized: Cadet Sean Randolph was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and selected as Commanding Officer of NJROTC. Cadet Brittany Truttling was selected to the position of Executive Officer. Cadet Cannon Baker was promoted to the rank of Senior Chief and announced as the new Senior Enlisted Officer for NJROTC. Cadet Arcacia Butler was promoted to the officer ranks and the position of Training Officer.

Central Cheerleaders competed at the Spirit of the South Regional Competition at Columbus State University on December 12, 2006. Both Junior Varsity and Varsity Squads won First Place in their division.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Cross has been  selected as a Flute player by the highly prestigious Southeastern United States Concert Honor Band Clinic to be held at the Troy University main campus in February, 2007. 

Congratulations to Cadets Brianne Brooks and Trey Bynam. They were voted Military Ball Queen and King by their peers in R.O.T.C. They will represent Central High School at the Military Ball on January 27.

Congratulations to the boys and girls track team which placed 5^th at the Northridge Invitational Track Meet January 13, 2007. Bernard Spivey and Michael Alexander placed 1^st and 3^rd, respectively, in the 400 meters. Spivey, Alexander, Curtis Hoyne and Chris Lee won the 4x400 meter relay, and Spivey, Hoyne, Lee and David Ray placed 4^th in the 4x800 meter relay.

Congratulations to Central High School band students Matt Gates, Juan Marrero and Kaitlyn Cross for being selected to participate this year in the Auburn University Honor Band.  Way to go!

Congratulations to the Navy JROTC program for winning 2^nd place overall in the Baldwin County Drill and Field Meet competition January 20, 2007. The unit took 1^st place in the 8x100 relay, 1^st in the push-up category, 1^st in the crab run relay, 2^nd in the Unarmed Exhibition Drill Team (led by Arcacia Butler), 2^nd in curl-ups, 3^rd in the Marksmanship Competition and 3^rd in the Basic Drill Competition (led by Jessica Jennings). Individual medal winners include Brianne Brooks (1^st place in female curl-ups), Shauvez Bennett (1^st place in male push-ups), Demario Ingram (1^st place in male curl-ups) and Jessica Jennings (2^nd place in female curl-ups).

Congratulations to all of the Central Scholars who competed at Andrews College January 19, 2007. Special recognition goes to Stephenie McGucken who took 2^nd place in Social Studies and Sarah Selvidge who took 2^nd place in Mathematics.

Congratulations to the members of the boys track team on their performance at the Clemson High School Invitational Track Meet. Bernard Spivey, Michael Alexander, Curtis Hoyne and Christopher Lee placed second in the 4x400 meter relay. Spivey and Alexander placed 4^th and 6^th in the open 400 meter dash. Anthony Ray and Hoyne also ran a personal best time in the 1500 meter run.

The CHS Symphonic Band was awarded an overall Superior Rating from State Concert Band Performance Assessment (formerly State Contest) at Gadsden City High School on Friday, March 16, 2007. The band is under the direction of Roger M. Redden.

Collin Ray was the first place winner in the Coweta Town (Phenix City) Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Christopher Columbus Essay contest. The topic was "At Sea or at Home: Different Perspectives of the Voyage to the New World." Collin's essay was also chosen as a first place winner at the State level. Congratulations to the Future Problem Solving Team who competed in Montgomery March 16-17, 2007. The team of Karli Jackson, Raymond Jones, Christian Lawrence and Collin Ray placed 2nd in the Senior Booklet competition and 3rd in Presentation of Action Plan competition. The team of Kaitlyn Cross, Preston Pritchett, Jake Shellhouse and Lateesha Thomas placed 2nd in Senior Presentation of Action Plan. The team of Chelsea Allen, Sarah Bowser, Claire Cawthorne and Hannah Frander placed 2nd in Middle Booklet. The team of David Conner, Anna Elkins, Angel Garrison and Justin Morgan placed 3rd in Middle Booklet competition. Collin Ray placed 3rd in Senior Scenario competition, Sarah Bowser placed 2nd and Sarah Selvidge placed 3rd in Middle Scenario competition.

Congratulations to Tavoris Bryant for his off-season workout accomplishment. Tavoris has a record-setting bench press of 400 pounds, which has not been accomplished at Central High School in at least 25 years. Way to go, Big T!

Congratulations to three Central High School NJROTC cadets who were recently selected to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. Cadet Jessica Jennings, Cadet Najeeb Carter and Cadet George Cunningham will be going to the Naval Academy this summer to participate in the seminar. These students are academically and physically sound and will represent CHS well. This is a big advantage for them as they apply for an appointment to the Naval Academy.

Congratulations to Andrew Terry for winning the district level Alabama Penman Creative Writing Contest in poetry. His entry advances to the statewide competition.

Congratulations to the following members of the Girls Track Team. They qualified for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Sectional II Track Meet: Alexandra Coleman, Amanda Jackson, Alessiya Johnson, Mikayla Johnson, Annie Jones, Trenneshia Miles, Ramona Smith, Christian Thomas, Precious Thomas.

Congratulations to Sarah Catherine Johnson and Chaz Tolbert for winning the two Henry Fleming Scholarships. Each winner will receive $1500 to attend the college or educational agency of their choice.

The boys tennis team placed second in the Sectional Tennis Tournament April 24-25. Matt East won the number 2 singles championship and Brett Blevins won the number 6 singles championship. The team of Olli Angermueller/East won the number 1 doubles championship.

The Central Varsity Softball Team won Sectionals May 5-6 and became the Class 6A Area 8 Champions.  Congratulations Girls!

Congratulations to Haley Wilson who is the Alabama Class 6A Girls State Champion Golfer. Haley shot a 2-day total of 5 under par 139, a state record. She beat the field by 17 shots.
