These
resources were created and shared by teachers and reading coaches
from many different places. Isn't it wonderful to share our hard
work and creative ideas?
Please share your ideas by emailing Dr. Elder at:

Teachers:
We have had a problem with misuse of some materials. For this reason,
some materials have been moved to a password protected page. This
includes the popular modified weekly tests prepared by Mary Coburn,
Kentwood, Louisiana.
In order to access these materials you will need the password and
then click
on this link. To get the password, you will need to email (selder@pcboe.net)
from a school email account and give your name and school. Hopefully,
this will solve the problem!

Organization
Kandi
Mobarakzadeh, 1st grade teacher at Lakewood, shared this organization
tip. Print this file, cut out and glue each "Week at a Glance"
to the front of a file folder. You can then laminate the file folders
if you wish. Keep everything pertaining to that lesson in the file
folder for future reference. You'll quickly be able to see what
skills are covered during that week by looking at the outside of
the file folder.

Focus Walls
Here
is an example of a focus wall for another reading series just to
give you an idea of the finished wall.
This one was created by Lise Welch, Utah.

No wall space? Consider making a portable focus wall by using a
triboard
(The portable triboard focus wall shown in the link above was created
by Dr. Carolyn Keasal, Auburn, Alabama)
Here are focus
wall labels from our 2nd Grade Storytown Resources. Use the
ones you want for your wall.
(The focus wall files below were created and shared by Courtney
Watts, Grayson, Louisiana and Melissa Albro, Santa Rosa County,
Florida)
These are Courtney's Theme
Titles for the Focus Wall.
Question
of the Day
(Thanks
to Maggie Castronuovo, Jackson, New Jersey)
Maggie displays the day's question on the classroom
television. Maggie says, "This is how my students begin their
day. After answering the question independently, we then share our
individual answers aloud, thereby leading to further discussion."

Building
Background Powerpoints
(Shared by Christy Campbell Reaves,
Reading Coach at Odenville Intermediate School, Alabama
Christy says, "We have a lot of children who don't bring some
of the background necessary for understanding the reading stories.
We have begun to use Building Background Powerpoints the week BEFORE
we share the story. They also lend themselves to be used with the
Strategic Intervention materials because every fifth lesson is a
preteach lesson for the upcoming lesson.)

Flap Books
(Created and shared by Jenny Poche,
Paulina, Louisiana)
This
picture shows a finished Flap Book.
Some of the pages are open and some are closed to help you visualize
the finished product.

Take a piece of construction paper and fold it hotdog style.
Cut one half of the construction paper with 4 equal slits (making
it 5 individual flaps).
OR print this template
and cut on the dotted lines and then fold.
Glue the vocabulary word on the flap. Glue the definition on the inside
so that when you lift up the word, the definition will be underneath
it.
Jenny has divided each lesson into two booklets.

word, appropriate cloze sentence, and student-friendly definition)
Vocabulary
Display
"W.O.W. WORDS"
(Print on cardstock. Add party decorations to your bulletin board
for extra pop!)
(If space is an issue in your room, consider this idea:
Print the files below and cut into individual flashcards. Punch a
hole in the top corner of each card and attach a ring to the group
of cards. Place the cards in a literacy center. Students work in pairs.
The first student chooses a word, reads it to his partner and has
the partner use the word in a sentence. You can add a student-friendly
definition to the back of each card if you wish. OR...another option...keep
the ring of word cards in a certain location and allow students to
autograph the word card each time they use the word in general conversation.
You can also do a combination of the two activities by having the
students use the word card ring as a center described above and have
them sign the back of the card when they use the word in general conversation.
Anything to motivate kids to keep these words in circulation!)

Benchmark Assessments
|
The
forms below were created and shared by Rachel Musser of Santa
Rosa County, Florida. Rachel suggests that teachers add students'
names in the column on the left, put an X in the column where
an error occured per item per student. Then, simply by reading
down the column a teacher will immediately determine the number
of items missed by class and by individual. This will be a great
tool for differentiated small group instruction. Rachel adds
these printing hints:
*Print in color to view items assessed and the frequency (color-coded)
*Use landscape orientation
*Use legal-sized paper
*All spreadsheets are two pages (print, trim, and tape to make
a final copy just slightly larger than letter-size paper)
