Pancakes
& Butter Sight Word Center
Here's
a Pancake Center Recording Sheet
This file includes center directions and pancake
word cards for all sight words introduced in kindergarten.
Use targeted sight words and add to the pancake words as sight
words are introduced in each theme. You may also print out
doubles so you can make it a concentration game or print several
and students will have multiple opportunities to read the
word.
(Print on cardstock, cut apart, add a Dollar
Store spatula and you've got a fun center! You may also want
to try adding a back piece of brown butcher paper and adding
a little newspaper stuffing to each pancake to get a 3-D effect.)
You will also find a capital/lowercase letter match version
of this game on the Letter Recognition page.

Roll a Word!
Print on cardstock (you could use different colors
for different themes to help organize). Cut out and assemble
cube. The student will roll the cube and read the word to a
partner. If he reads it correctly, he either writes the word
or colors in the space in the correct column on his recording
sheet. Alternate turns. The first player to fill a column is
the winner. Play could also continue until all spaces are filled.

Kindergarten Building/Blending
Words Practice
Print the onset cube (beginning letter) on one color
cardstock and the ending (word family) on another color cardstock
(I like to use green for onset and red for ending). You will also
find vowel and consonant cubes below. You may print the vowel cube
on one color cardstock and consonant cubes on another color. Students
can roll VC words by using two cubes or CVC words by rolling three
cubes. The consonant cubes are printed in order of introduction in
the Harcourt Storytown series.
Cut out and assemble cubes. Students toss each cube and read the resulting
word to a partner. They then decide if the word is a real word or
a nonsense word.
A
recording sheet for these activites can be found here.
Or you may want to keep printing to a minimum by having students simply
fold a piece of paper hotdog style and draw their own happy face and
sad face headers.

Print on cardstock. Cut out and assemble cube. The
student will roll the cube and read the word to a partner. If he reads
it correctly, he either writes the word or colors in the space in
the correct column on his recording sheet. Alternate turns. The first
player to fill a column is the winner. Play could also continue until

(Print on cardstock. Glue procedure instructions to back of enlarged
print word. You will have an explicit, easily followed script on the

through your teacher's edition!)
Vocabulary Display
"CATCHY WORDS"
(Display your vocabulary words with a jar graphic or a real butterfly
net.
Each theme's words are printed on a different insect.)
Spelling Word Practice
(To use these as a center activity, place spelling
word flashcards in a center along with the spelling fans.
Option 1: Children can work with a partner by pulling a card and reading
the word to their partner. The partner will build the word by moving
the blades on the fan without looking at the flashcard. Partner 1
will check his work by comparing the spelling fan to the word card.
Option 2: Children can also work in 3's with one person calling the
words and the other two students racing each other to see who can
build the word the quickest. Again, the first partner will check for
accuracy.
Option 3: Children who are severely struggling with spelling words
can pull a card, read it, and build it by looking at the word card
as a model. This will be done independently.
Option 4: Students can complete the activity independently in a Look,
Cover, Spell, Check method. The student will pull a card and read
it. The student will look at the card while verbally spelling the
word. The student will then put the word face down. The student then
builds the word with the spelling fan. The student checks his work
by comparing his spelling fan to the flashcard.)

Vocabulary Tic-Tac-Toe
(For this game, make a tic-tac-toe board. Or you may
print seasonal tic-tac-toe boards at the links below. Print out the
vocabulary cards for the desired lesson and cut apart. Students play
with a partner. Put the cards face down in a stack. Partner 1 takes
a card and reads the question to Partner 2. If Partner 2 answers correctly,
he marks an X on the tic-tac-toe board. If he does not answer correctly,
Partner 1 marks an O on the tic-tac-toe board. Partner 2 then takes
a card and reads the question to Partner 1. Partner 1 marks an O if
he answers correctly. Partner 2 marks an X if Partner 1 does not answer
correctly. Play continues until someone gets three in a row on the
tic-tac-toe board.)
Vocabulary Dominoes
(Print on cardstock and cut apart dominoes. Note: the
first domino piece will have "start" on one side and a vocabulary
word on the other side. Lay the "start" domino down first.
The student will match the domino with the correct definition to that
domino and continue laying down dominoes in that manner until all
dominoes are down. Note: the domino with "stop" should be
last.)
