Lakewood Elementary School provides reading instruction to instill attitudes, skills, and habits
which will support students as they read for information, general knowledge, and enjoyment
throughout their lives.

Great Leaps Reading is designed to help boost the reading progress of primary grade students as a
supplement to the teachers' ongoing reading program. Ms. Shine, a faithful Lakewood volunteer,
delivers daily Great Leaps Reading lessons in a one-on-one format.
Students collect points for reading goals and then trade points in for prizes.
If you're interested in volunteering to work with a few students on a daily basis,
this program may be a good match for you! Contact Dr. Elder for more information.
Lakewood Elementary uses technology to improve our students' reading ability.
These children are improving oral reading fluency by using Read Naturally.
The children set reading rate goals and practice passages until they reach the goal.
The teacher or trained volunteer then listen to the child read the passage and pass the student
so that they may begin working on a new passage.
This is another volunteer opportunity for parents, grandparents, or community members.

Accelerated Reader is a software program which encourages children to independently read appropriately leveled text. Students read a selection and then take a comprehension test on the computer. Students can earn points for each book passed.

Each teacher sets up fun literacy centers in the classroom. Students practice reading skills they are learning while waiting for their turn to meet with the teacher in a small group for reading instruction.
Sometimes they play games with a partner like these two students are doing.

Sometimes they read with a partner like these two first graders.
