This section of the Lakewood Media Center Website is for Lakewood teachers...sort of an FAQ for technology help and other media-related issues!

The Media Handbook (pdf) contains the following help desk information along with policies and procedures for the Lakewood Media Center.

Teachers, if these troubleshooting tips do not help, please email a work order to the library.  The email must contain the following:

  •  Teacher's room number
  •  Letter or number of computer (A, B, 1, 2, etc.)
  •  Model number or printer or computer (Dell Optiplex GX260, HP Deskjet 3650, etc.)
  •  Detailed description of problem

Network Access Questions

I can't access network programs such as Read Naturally...and/or...I can't access network drives (F, H, K, S, T).  What can I do?   When you can't access the network, a number of factors could be involved.  Here are some things to try:
  1. Check the other computers in your classroom.  If none of them will access the network, the problem is most likely in your classroom.  Try restarting computers until they access the network.
  2. Check to see if cables are connected properly.  There should be a network cable connecting your computer to an active port in the wall.
  3. Make sure you are logged in correctly.  Student logins do not have access to the T drive.  If you have forgotten your login information, see Mrs. Sanders.

Printer Questions

My printer is printing "gobbledygook."  What do I do? Shut down the computers and unplug the printer's power cable.  Wait a minute or two, then reconnect the printer's power cable and turn on the computers.
I've tried to print several documents, but nothing is printing.  What do I do? If the printer's power light is on, shut down the computers and unplug the printer's power cable.  Wait a minute or two, then reconnect the printer's power cable and turn on the computers.
My computer is not networked to the correct printer.  How do I fix that?
  1. From the desktop of the computer that is physically connected to the printer, right click on My Computer.
  2. Choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click the Computer Name tab.
  4. Make a note of the computer name.  (Note:  The computer name is everything listed before .esc.schboard.net)
  5. From the desktop of the computer you wish to network to the printer, click Start -- Run.
  6. In the box next to the word Open, type \\ followed by your computer name.
  7. Right-click on the desired printer and select Connect.

That's it!  You've networked your printer!

Keyboard and Mouse Questions

The computer doesn't recognize the mouse and/or the keyboard.  What's wrong? Sometimes, the computer loses it's connection to the mouse or keyboard for no apparent reason.  First, try disconnecting and then reconnecting the problem device.  If this doesn't solve your problem, shut down the computers.  Wait a minute or two, then turn on the computers.

Questions About Digital Cameras

Are there digital cameras available for checkout?   The following digital cameras are available for checkout from the library:
  • Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Cameras (2)
  • Olympus FE-20 (2)
  • Olympus Stylus 730 (1)
  • Panasonic MiniDV Camcorder
  • Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 (1)
  • Sony Mavica CD500 (1)
  • Sony Mavica FD 200 (2)
What's the difference in the cameras?
  • Kodak pocket video cameras will record still images as well as video.  Use this camera for non-print quality pictures and content to be placed on the Internet.
  • The Olympus Stylus FE-20 saves videos and 8 megapixel pictures to an SD card that stays in the camera.  Use this camera for print-quality pictures and for videos that can be used in large group presentations.
  • The Olympus Stylus 730 saves videos and 7 megapixel pictures to an SD card that stays in the camera.  Use this camera for print-quality pictures and for videos that can be used in large group presentations.
  • The Panasonic MiniDV camcorder records digital video onto a MiniDV cassette.  Use this for taping lengthy segments such as classroom instruction.
  • The Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 saves videos and 8 megapixel pictures to an SD card that stays in the camera.  Use this camera for print-quality pictures and for videos that can be used in large group presentations.

  • The Sony Mavica FD200 saves 2 megapixel pictures and a 15-second video to a removable floppy disk.  Use this camera for non-print quality pictures and pictures that will be posted on the Internet.
Does the library supply storage media for the cameras?   No.  No storage media is required for the Kodak, Olympus or Sony Cybershot cameras.  However, if you use the Sony Mavicas, you must supply your own floppy disc or mini-CD.  You must also supply your own MiniDV cassette for the Panasonic camcorder.
How do I retrieve the pictures from the camera?
  • Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Cameras - Connect the USB connection to the USB port on your computer.  Note:  You must first download the ArcSoft MediaImpression software to work with the Kodak images.
  • All Olympus Cameras - Use the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard.
  • Panasonic MiniDV Camcorder - Connect the camcorder to a VCR using RCA cables to record the video to a VHS tape.  Connect the camcorder to the computer using a USB cable; capture video directly to the computer with a program such as Windows Movie Maker.
  • Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 - Use the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard.
  • Sony CD500 - Finalize the CD, removed it from the camera and place it in the appropriate drive of your computer.
  • Sony FD200 - Remove the floppy disk from the camera and place it in the appropriate disk drive of your computer.

Questions about New Students

I just got a new student.  How do I get textbooks and workbooks?  Please email the library notifying us that you have a new student with a list of the textbooks you use.  If you also need workbooks for the new student, include that in your email.  We will get those books to you as soon as possible.

Questions about Withdrawing Students

One of my students is withdrawing.  What do I need to do for the library?

As soon as you find out your student is withdrawing, please send that student's textbooks and library book to the library.  You may keep the workbooks in your room in case you get a new student in the future.

Note:  All textbooks in your room should be assigned to students.  The only exception may be class sets of dictionaries, spelling books, etc. that stay in your classroom.  NO UNASSIGNED TEXTBOOKS MAY BE SENT HOME WITH STUDENTS.

Questions about Presentation Equipment

I want to use one of the large-group areas (cafeteria, multi-purpose room) for instruction.  What presentation equipment is available? How do I make arrangements to have it at the time it is needed.   The cafeteria has everything you need for a large-group presentation:  screen, networked computer and projector.  The multi-purpose room only has a screen.  So you'll need to check out the mobile cart with laptop and projector.  Note:  Technology crew members may assist you with setup if needed.
