Assessments for Language 5th Grade

 First Nine Weeks (14 grades)

1.    Forms of nouns (identify nouns, possessive, plural, compound words)

  1. Abbreviations (capitalization, punctuation, spelling)
  2. End marks
  3. Sentences (run-on, fragments)
  4. Titles of works (capitalization, underline, etc.)
  5. Quotation marks (using commas, capitalization)

 

The following need to be introduced, but will not be assessed until later:  subject/verb agreement, letter writing, verbs, capitalization, adjectives (descriptive adjectives), correct errors in sentence structure

 

Second Nine Weeks (12 grades)

  1. Letter writing (parts of a letter, capitalization, punctuation)
  2. Verbs (identify, helping verbs, linking, contractions, tenses)
  3. Subject/Verb agreement
  4. Adjectives (identify, comparing, more/most, good/bad, articles, demonstrative)
  5. Capitalization (proper noun, proper adj, first word, etc.)

 

The following need to be introduced, but will not be assessed until later:  commas, figurative language, pronouns, adverbs, commas, and negatives

 

Third Nine Weeks (14 grades)

  1. Figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification)
  1. Pronouns (identify, I/me, us/we, possessives, contractions)
  2. Adverbs (identify, comparing)
  3. Commas (in a series, set off appositives, in direct address)
  4. Colons
  5. Negatives

 

The following need to be introduced, but will not be assessed until later:  interjections, conjunctions, cursive writing, and word processing skills

 

Fourth Nine Weeks (16 grades)

  1. Conjunctions
  2. Interjections
  3. Write legibly in cursive (rubric)
  4. Use computer for expression (Using a word processor)
  5. Organize and present in visual, oral, and print form (science fair project)
  6. Identify parts of speech
  7. Correct errors in sentence structure

 

 

Other info:

Students will be given writing prompts to write two page essays, which simulate the Alabama's Fifth Grade Writing Assessment.  Writing essays for various contests will be highly encouraged and sometimes required, such as the symphony essay and the DARE essay.
