GEP Program Description

The following is a description of the units/activities/options offered to students in grade 5.

Goal 1: To enhance creative thinking skills and problem solving abilities.

The students will participate in activities from Talents Unlimited, Action-based Problem Solving, Future Problem Solving, and/or Community Problem Solving programs.

The students will compete in at least one program competition to submit at the state level from United Nations, History Day, Future Problem Solving, Community Problem Solving, or Scenario Writing.

The students will use math and science processes as they observe and/or conduct experiments or explorations to solve problems.

Goal 2: To develop and improve research skills to create a project or participate in a competition.

The students will learn to utilize resources, such as encyclopedias, newspapers, Internet, and other non-fiction text, as well as conduct personal interviews.

The students will locate, paraphrase, and summarize gathered information to create a project or participate in a competition.

Goal 3: To enhance writing and creative expression skills.

The students will write poems, paragraphs, letters, essays, reports, and scenarios (futuristic short stories).

The students will create brochures, pop-up cards, newsletters, books, posters, and presentation boards.

The students will be encouraged to participate in the Young Author’s Program or the Storytelling Festival.

The students will integrate art, crafts, drama, and/or music into some of their projects.

Goal 4: To improve computer and technology skills.

The students will use word processors, computers, and video cameras.

The students will develop webpages, PowerPoint presentations, video projects, and news broadcasts.

Goal 5: To encourage positive relationships, increase leadership qualities, and provide opportunities to make a difference through community service.

The students will participate in group activities from Project Wild, Project Wet, and Project Learning Tree.

The students will participate in various group activities, which promote teamwork, such as Action-based Problem Solving and Future Problem Solving.

The students may participate in community service for the Give Me Five Program or the Community Problem Solving Program.
