School Time

Hi!  My name is Haley Reeder.  I am 12 years old and live in Kingslen, Ohio.  I live with my parents.  I have a really neat story to tell you.  It’s about what happened to me last year.  You see I’m a home-schooled student, and this story tells you how it all got started.

Last summer, I asked my parents if I was going to go to my old school.   It was called “GALAXY PUBLIC SCHOOL.”  The reason I asked was because there had been a bomb threat the year before and I remembered it had really bothered my parents.

“I don’t know, remember that bomb threat last year?” My dad said.

“But dad it didn’t happen, and where would I attend if I didn’t go to Galaxy?” I complained.

“Well your friend, Ginny, is a home-schooled student and she seems to like it.  Why don’t we try that?” my mom said.

“I guess so, but I won’t get to see a lot of my friends and there’s not a really awesome galactic playground at home,” I protested.

But, of course my parents won.  So when school time came around, I was laying in my “SLEEPER” waiting for my “teacher.”  I didn’t really like the idea of home schooling, but my parents thought it would be safer and a little fun.

“GOOD MORNING!!!!!!!!” yelled my mom from the hall.

It was going to be a long day.  I could definitely tell. First of all, I didn’t want to do this. But, my parents made me.  I hate it when they do that.

Well after my home schooling was through, I went over to my friend’s apartment.  His name is Simon.  He’s one of my best friends. I can always talk to him about things.  It’s kind of weird because he’s a boy, crazy, right?!

The first thing he asked when I arrived there was, “ Where were you at Learning Fortress (that means school) today?”

Then I said, I’m starting home school, isn’t that horrible?!

Then Simon said, I think home schooling would be fun.”

“ You do.” I cautiously said.  “Why would you say that”?

“Well… well it would be a lot safer and I would get to spend more time with my mom” he said.

Then I thought a little, I guess I really never thought about it that way.  I mean it would be safer, and I could spend a lot more time with my mom.

So after a while I left.  When I got to my house, my parents were sitting in the living room talking. So I quickly said, “Hi, I’m back from Simon’s apartment.”

“Hi, listen we need to talk to you about the home schooling” they both said hastily.

“Well mom, dad I kind of like it now, I mean I didn’t really like it before, but Simon and I talked about it some and I realized that it could be a lot safer than the Learning Fortress, and it might be kind of fun too!!!” I said cheerfully.  I also told them that I felt horrible about the way I treated them about the whole thing, especially the way I had treated mom.

Then I went on up to my room, and after a while the phone rang so I answered it.

“Hello, Reeder residence.”

“Yes, this is Technical Resource we would like to speak to Leslie Reeder” someone said.

Since my parents left after we talked, she wasn’t able to come to the phone, so that’s what I told him. “ She’s not able to talk right now, may I take a message?” I asked.

The voice answered, “Tell her that the job she wanted came through, bye!”

A job, but she already has a job teaching and taking care of me. This must have been what they wanted to tell me about.  I can’t believe mom wanted a new job.  I guess I did show them that I didn’t want to do this.

When my parents got home I told them what happened on the phone while they were gone.  Then we talked about her taking the job and we decided that they would buy a state-of the-art robot. The robot would be my home schooling teacher, and mom would work at Technology Resources

So I guess you could of said that everything worked out right.  I said, "Guess, remember!"  You see I have another friend and she didn’t like the idea of me being home schooled.  She thought that we wouldn’t get to see each other as much.  So I told her that I wanted to start home schooling, and that I would try to see her as often as possible.

So then it started to work out.  I knew home schooling was going to be hard, but it’s fun.  After Simon and I had our conversation I thought better about home schooling.  Even [GR1] though my mom doesn’t teach me any more I still like it, because I get to stay home and my mom has a two hour food break, so I can eat lunch with her.

So I admit it, my parents were right, I mean they got to be right once in awhile don’t they?  You might not like home schooling, but I know that I sure do, it’s kind of cool, there’s no kid smarter than you (if you’re an only child I mean).  That’s really out-of–this- world.  So my point is that home schooling is really neat. I know it is.  You know what my problem was; I didn’t know that it was going to be really neat.  So just try it.  I know that if you just give it a try you might like it!!
