"Perfect" is always an illusion.

This book is about a girl named Isabelle Lee.  she is 13, and she is going through some rough times.  Her father died about two years ago, and her mom is acting like a crazy loon because of the death.  One day her sister finds out Isabelle, or "Belly," is purging her food, and Isabelle ends up in a support group for eating disorders where all they talk about is their bodies.  Now Isabelle is stuck here because it was a part of the deal with her mother.  The book is one of the best books I've ever read, and I encourage everyone else to read it also.

Rules of the Road and Best Foot Forward by Joan Bauer

Who Knew Selling Shoes Could Be Interesting?

Rules of the Road and its sequel, Best Foot Forward, were surprise likes for me. I read the first book knowing only that it was by the author of a Newbery Honor book that I had enjoyed very much (Hope Was Here). I had my doubts, especially as the main character of the book works part-time in a shoe store. Looking back, I'm not sure why I was so skeptical, since Bauer had actually made diner waitressing interesting in Hope Was Here. But then, the books aren't really about selling shoes.

Possibly One of the Best Books I've Ever Read

This is an amazingly powerful book that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.  Beginning with her first day at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino knows she is the most hated person on campus.  She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, and now her old friends won't talk to her and strangers harass her in the hallways.  So Melinda retreats into her own world of silence, wrapped up in a secret so horrible it might eat her alive if she doesn't speak up and share it.
