January 16, 2023
Central High School's latest addition to its esteemed faculty, Chef Arjay Gomez, is more than just a culinary instructor. He's a beacon of passion and dedication, inspiring students in the art of cooking. Originally from the Philippines, he brings a rich heritage and a decade of culinary expertise to Central High.
His story is one of perseverance and dedication. With a 100% Filipino background, he has navigated through challenges, transforming them into stepping stones. His ten years in the culinary field, seven of which were in a management role, underline his commitment and love for cooking. "Cooking is my whole persona," Chef Gomez stated.
The transition from a bustling kitchen to the classroom hasn't been without challenges, but his resilience shines through. Guided by his mentor, Mrs. Sophia Taylor, he has adapted his extensive industry experience to an educational setting. "The hunger and passion in my industry are slowly fading," he reflected. "I want my students to fall in love with food like I did."
Each day his class is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the culinary arts. His favorite moments? When students ask questions. "Being able to pass on my knowledge to my students is my favorite part of the day," he shared. In his quest to make students fall in love with cooking, Chef Gomez is not just teaching recipes; he's nurturing future culinary enthusiasts.
English was once a formidable barrier for him, especially when he first arrived in the U.S. Grateful to his English teacher, Mrs. Emily Gunnels, he credits her with helping him overcome linguistic hurdles. This experience has undoubtedly shaped his empathetic approach to teaching.
What fuels his dedication? The sheer curiosity and eagerness of his students. "Seeing them be curious about cooking is very motivating and eye-opening for me," he said. It's not just about imparting knowledge but kindling a lifelong passion for culinary arts.
Outside the kitchen, Chef Gomez is a devoted father to three children: Adelina (8), Kade (7), and Jorah (2). His role as a parent complements his teaching, as he understands the nuances of guiding young minds.
Chef Gomez acknowledged the unique personalities and aspirations of his students. "These kids are not really kids anymore. They are their own person," he said. He also finds humor in current student trends, like the contrast between their enthusiasm for TikTok dances and their shyness in presenting projects.
As Chef Gomez continues to shape the future of culinary arts at Central High, he leaves an indelible mark on his students. His journey, marked by challenges, learning, and unbridled passion, inspires aspiring chefs walking the halls of Central High. He isn't just teaching cooking; he's nurturing a new generation of culinary artists.
