Phenix City Schools Proudly Designated as Purple Star Schools Across Entire District
April 15, 2024
In a significant achievement that underscores its commitment to supporting military families, Phenix City Schools is thrilled to announce that all its schools have been honored as Purple Star Schools. This prestigious designation is awarded to schools demonstrating significant commitment to students and families connected to our nation's military.
Thanks to the collective and dedicated efforts of the entire district, every school has not only met but also exceeded the stringent criteria set forth by the Purple Star Schools Program. This significant achievement is a testament to our district’s unwavering dedication to meeting the educational needs and ensuring the well-being of military-connected students as they transition into and within our schools.
Superintendent Sherrod said, “We are immensely proud of this distinction, which reflects our unwavering commitment to serving the unique needs of military families. It is our honor to provide a supportive educational environment that acknowledges the sacrifices made by military families.”
At Lakewood Primary School, counselors particularly enjoy this month, reading "A Paper Hug" by Stephanie Skolmoski with students and creating their own paper hugs using paper, scissors, tape, crayons, and yarn. These special paper hugs are then shared with families before a service member departs, creating a touching connection during a challenging time.
The Purple Star designation is a testament to the specific initiatives undertaken by our schools to support military families. These include appointing a dedicated staff point of contact for military students and families, maintaining a resourceful webpage for military families, and implementing a student-led transition program. These initiatives ensure that military families receive the most considerate and practical support possible, reflecting our commitment to their unique needs.
To celebrate this achievement, Phenix City Schools will host a series of events to honor military families in conjunction with the Month of the Military Child in April. Each school will also display a Purple Star recognition banner, proudly affirming our role as a supportive educational community.
