PCS to Offer Free Breakfast and Lunch to All Students
January 19, 2023
Phenix City Schools has announced a new program to provide all students with free breakfast and lunch. This initiative, set to commence on February 1, 2024, is part of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a measure sponsored by the USDA under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
The CEP aims to ensure that children in low-income communities receive nutritious school meals, vital for their growth and health. By participating in this program, Phenix City Schools align with the Act's mission to combat child hunger and promote healthy eating habits.
Michelle Lian, the Child Nutrition Director of Phenix City Schools, emphasized the importance of this program. "Our commitment is to ensure that every school child has access to healthy meals. This is a step forward in ensuring no child starts their school day hungry or is distracted by hunger throughout their day," she said.
While the program covers the cost of the first reimbursable meal, it is important to note that charges accrued before the program's start date are still the responsibility of the parents. Additionally, a la carte items will be available at an additional cost.
Parents are advised to clear any negative balances on student accounts as soon as possible. The school district's decision to participate in this program reflects a broader commitment to student health and well-being.
This initiative marks a significant step in Phenix City Schools' efforts to support its students, ensuring every child has the nutrition they need to succeed academically and grow into healthy adults. For more information or questions, the Child Nutrition Department can be contacted at 334-298-0534.
