Showing Up and Shining Bright
Your child's success begins with consistent attendance. Whether your child is starting their educational journey in preschool or navigating the challenges of high school, regular attendance is essential for their academic and social growth. We understand that your role as a parent or guardian is pivotal in ensuring your child's attendance, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Why Attendance Matters:
Research has shown that when students are chronically absent, missing 10% or more of the school year (equivalent to 18 days), it can significantly impact their education. They are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, may struggle in middle school, and face a higher risk of not graduating from high school. This is particularly crucial to understand in the context of the challenges brought about by the recent pandemic.
Today, chronic absenteeism affects an estimated 16 million students nationwide, which is approximately one out of every three students. This increase has affected students from all backgrounds and economic levels. It's a challenge that requires our collective attention and commitment to address.
Our Commitment to You:
Phenix City Schools is committed to working with you to ensure that your child attends school regularly. We believe in a collaborative approach that involves parents, guardians, teachers, and the community. By working together, we can help your child succeed academically and socially.
-
We understand that challenges can arise, both inside and outside of school, that may cause your child to miss school. Instead of blame, we want to partner with you to understand these challenges and provide support. Regular attendance helps maintain routines that support your child's well-being and ensures they have access to important resources and learning opportunities.
-
You are an essential partner in your child's education. We recognize the importance of trust and strong relationships in supporting your child's learning, especially if they have experienced trauma. Our commitment to building trust starts from day one and continues throughout the school year.
-
We know that children are more likely to engage in learning and attend school when they feel safe, connected, and supported. Our teachers and staff are dedicated to creating a positive and nurturing environment that encourages your child's belief in their ability to succeed.
-
We believe in transparency and data-driven decision-making. We will share chronic absence data with you to raise awareness about attendance challenges and identify students needing additional support. Our goal is to provide early intervention when necessary to ensure your child's success.
-
Your child's health is a top priority. We will work with you to ensure your child remains physically and emotionally healthy. We'll also collaborate with health professionals to provide guidance on when students should stay home and when it's safe to return to school.
-
We recognize that addressing attendance barriers may require support beyond the school walls. We are committed to collaborating with local leaders, public agencies, and community organizations to tackle transportation, housing, and food insecurity issues. Together, we can create a positive and supportive environment for all students.
Thank you for partnering with Phenix City Schools in ensuring your child's attendance and, ultimately, their success in school, work, and life. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of our students.
