Training Prerequisites
Below is the complete process of becoming a school bus driver in Alabama. Our team is happy to work closely with you throughout this process to ensure you complete each step. Read the information below thoroughly to obtain an Alabama bus driver's certificate.
Application:

A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required. NO EXCEPTIONS

Please call (334) 298-2823 once the application has been completed.
Background Check:

Click on this link to register and pay for your background check. This will take you to the Alabama D.O.E. Applicant Processing Services Website.

On the right side, under "Registration," click "Register Online."

Select "Employment" as a school bus driver

Complete registration and pay the fee online.

Once you have completed and paid, print your confirmation number. You will need this information when you go for fingerprinting.

You must be registered, and all fees must be paid online before arrival.

Fingerprinting will be done at Phenix City Schools Central Office.

Must be obtained from the State Driver's License Center

D.O.T. Physical:

Must successfully pass a D.O.T. physical exam.
CDL Learners:

Complete the four-part written test to obtain the CDL Learners Permit with school bus and passenger endorsements.

Alabama residents can obtain a study booklet from the P.C.S. transportation department.

Training

Before the Alabama New Driver School, a driver candidate must complete at least 20 training hours with a local trainer from Phenix City Schools.
New Driver School:

This four-day class administers a pre-trip inspection, road test, and air brake test.
Fees:

Phenix City Schools do not charge fees. Fees are set by the agency administering services.
